Planning Permit Expiry Timeframes - Has my Planning Permit expired?
The Victorian Government has introduced new standard timeframes for planning permits under the Planning and Environment Act 1987. In most cases, development must now
- commence within 3 years and
- be completed within 5 years of the permit issue date,
unless the permit states otherwise or an extension to both the commencement and completed dates has been approved.
These rules also apply to existing permits that are still current, including some older permits without commencement dates.
If works have legally commenced, the permit is generally not affected, and the original completion timeframe in the permit would still apply.
If development has not commenced, the permit may now be at risk of expiring under the new rules, however if applicable, you can apply for an extension of time.
