Landslide Susceptibility - New Planning Controls for Mornington Peninsula Properties

Last night, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council adopted the progression of Amendment C312, introducing interim planning controls to manage landslide risks. This follows the release of the Board of Inquiry report into the McCrae landslide.

What’s changing?
• An interim Erosion Management Overlay – Schedule 7 (EMO7) will apply to 27,000+ residential properties on the Peninsula.
• These properties were identified as ‘highly susceptible’ to landslide risk in a 2012 Landslide Susceptibility Assessment by Cardno Lane Piper.
• Property owners will need a planning permit for most building and works.
• Applications must include geotechnical information addressing landslide risks to property and life.

When will this apply?
It is anticipated the Planning Minister will expedite approval of this interim amendment until revised and permanent overlays are introduced following a comprehensive update of Shire-wide landslide susceptibility data in the coming years.
